Hello, I am Monica. Do you want to improve your sign language skills and/or improve your understanding of Deaf culture/people?
I have been involved in the Deaf community my whole life. I started teaching around 10 years ago and completed the NZSL teacher training courses through New Zealand Sign Language Teachers Association (NZSLTA) (from 2014 until now, I also attend ongoing Professional Development that is provided via the NZSLTA.)
In 2001 I completed a BA Hons in Deaf Studies with Education Studies at the University of Central Lancashire, UK. After that, went to work at Deaf Studies Trust in Bristol, UK doing research and working on Deaf projects.
I then emigrated to New Zealand and started working in the Deaf community doing a variety of community, organisational, service work and have been involved in many projects related to sign language and Deaf people.
In total I have been promoting and providing sign language courses to hearing and hard of hearing (HoH) people for over 10 years.
I also founded a group called Children of Deaf Adults (CODA). This group is for Youth CODA so that they can discuss and share their lived experiences and also have fun. We provided monthly activities and annual camps.
I offer regular, refresher face to face classes, presentations and one to one or small groups. I also have basic skills in American Sign Language (ASL), British Sign Language (BSL), Kenyan Sign Language (KSL), International Sign (IS), xero account, co-ordinate events & projects. Please email me on monica.b.b.leach@gmail.com to book a time and day.
Sign West was set up locally in Titirangi.

FAQ
Why did I pick SignWest?
I came to New Zealand and lived in West Auckland for all of 20 years. That's why I picked the name ‘SignWest’ to focus on West Auckland area.
If courses do not match me, is it possible to arrange private sessions?
Yes, arrange either private session which can be delivered either face to face or via zoom. Happy to arrange that on a needs basis.
Will there be a NZSL chat practice group?
Yes I am working on this, my plan is to have it set up every month at Titirangi Community House on a Sunday morning at 10am-12pm to help students build their confidence and to practice conversational with others they may or may not know.
